Count Me In! joins forces with Tewkesbury Garden Centre for a greener future

Count Me In! is joining forces with Tewkesbury Garden Centre to give customers a push in a “greener” direction.

The Garden Centre has handed over a section of the site on Worcester Road to the Count Me In! ‘Growing Places’ initiative. The area will be used as a permanent display and demonstration area where visitors can find out facts and tips on growing their own food. Demonstrations will include: container growing, raised beds, seed sowing, composting, tips on attracting helpful insects and companion planting.

Count Me In! is funding Growing Places officer Jo Worthy-Jones from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, to lead the garden centre project. She will run bi-monthly demonstrations from the Count Me In! area, beginning with a Halloween Pumpkin Carving event for children on Thursday 29th October.

She said: “I’m delighted to be working with Tewkesbury Garden Centre. The display space will give people the opportunity to pick up ideas for growing their own food and hopefully to see things progress from seed sowing to harvesting over the growing season. I’m looking forward to demonstrating how to grow your own food regardless of how much space you have and how to encourage beneficial wildlife.”

The Pumpkin Carving event will entertain children during the October half term holiday. The parent-supervised event will run from (10am-3pm) and will cost £1 per child, per pumpkin. Count Me In! staff will be on hand to help children design and carve out their pumpkins which they can take home and display on Halloween.

Garden Centre manager Nancy Kelly said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Growing Places project and we are looking forward to helping the people of Tewkesbury get the most out of growing their own food.”
