Count Me In! leaders saddle-up for board meeting on a bike!
Not content with discussing the details of the Count Me In! programme in a board room, the leaders of the initiative jumped into the saddle on Friday (19th) for a meeting on two wheels.
The dozen cyclists experienced Tewkesbury by bike to see first hand what needs to be done to improve the town for cyclists and how commuters can be helped out of their cars and on to their bikes.
During the three-hour meeting, the group travelled through various areas including Priors Park, Wheatpieces, Northway, Mitton and the Town Centre discussing the ways in which the areas can be improved for cyclists.
“All partners agreed that the cycle tour opened up new perspectives on issues and would help the Board take forward the opportunity to make the town a healthier place to live in. It was recognised that there was a great opportunity in Tewkesbury to take the main themes of the Count Me In! project forward with the local community to make a real difference and make Tewkesbury a healthier town,”
Chris Shaw, Count Me In! board member
Included in the cycle group were the Count Me In! board partners including representatives from Gloucestershire County Council, Tewkesbury Borough Council, Gloucestershire NHS (PCT), Glos. Food Vision, Active Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire University.
The cycle meeting highlighted the need for improvements in the cycle network, signage and cycle parking.
The cycle meeting took place after the Count Me In! programme hosted a week of cycling events as part of national Bike Week. An information event for employees at the Basepoint Business Park was followed by a Bike to Work day, which included a free bikers’ breakfast for all those who took part. A public event was also held in partnership with Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Cycle Campaign, which offered advice, route assistance and cycling tips to would-be cyclists in Tewkesbury.
